Silver and gold

Silver and gold are not on a wheel

of harmonizing shades;
rather we’ve made a ranking of metals
and colours of meaning

“You don’t win the silver;
you lose gold.”

Mines mine for gold;
silver, a side effect.

Gold keeps the rich rich;
silver kills germs.

He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth;
she is a gold digger.

Gold fish, adorable;
silver fish, disgusting.

Silver on jewelry, still costume.
“Someday you’ll work in gold,” a jeweller’s praise.

There is a silver lining,
she got a gold star.

Silver and gold are not on a wheel;
we’ve put them on a ladder.

But an Olympic gold medal
is made of silver metal.
